  • Chinese Gua Sha £45.00

The most common conditions and symptoms treated with Gua Sha include: Back pain Shoulder and neck tension Carpal tunnel syndrome Tennis elbow Poor circulation Scar tissue Cellulite What is Gua Sha? Gua Sha is a natural, alternative therapy that uses scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation. This ancient Chinese healing technique may offer a unique approach to better health with issues like chronic pain. Gua Sha scrapes your skin with short or long strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow. We make these strokes with a smooth edged tool known as a gua massage tool. We apply oils to your skin, and then use the tool in a scraping motion. Gua Sha is intended to address stagnant energy, called chi, in the body that may be responsible for inflammation. Inflammation is the underlying cause of several conditions associated with chronic pain. Rubbing the skin’s surface is helps break up this energy, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. We use Gua Sha on the back, buttocks, neck, arms, and legs, using a gentle version of it on the face as a facial technique. Gua Sha Mechanism & Diagnosis Researchers have begun investigating Gua Sha’ in more detail. Recent studies show that the traditional Chinese medical practice resulting in red petechiae upregulates the immune system, in particular heme oxygenase-1, a molecule with strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant action. As extravasated blood cells from the Gua Sha process are reabsorbed into the circulatory system, they stimulate the release of HO-1, bilirubin and biliverdin, producing an anti-inflammatory response. This helps explain Gua Sha’s use in treating allergies, asthma, IBS, and colds. Gua Sha stimulates surface lymph and microvascular circulation. A 2019 animal study found that Gua Sha can effectively stimulate the absorption of interstitial fluid into the lymph and capillary beds, notably improving local circulation. This explains why Gua Sha has been found to help relieve painful breast engorgement in new nursing mothers. This partially explains how cosmetic application to the face may assist in relieving puffiness. Visual signs of Gua Sha If you give Gua Sha a try, don’t be alarmed if you see light bruising. “The scraping sometimes produces light petechiae on the skin that can vary from light pink to red and even purple”. This colour lasts anywhere from 1 to 7 days and is not painful or sensitive. Some of our techniques are light and this means no marks will be left. The science behind Gua Sha Gua Sha has been proven effective in numerous studies. In a 2017 study , older adults with back pain were treated with either Gua Sha or a hot pack. While both treatments relieved symptoms equally well, the effects of those treated with Gua Sha lasted longer. In a 2014 study, research found that Gua Sha improved the range of movement and reduced pain in people who used computers frequently compared with a control group that had no treatment. What are the benefits of Gua Sha? Gua Sha reduces inflammation, treating causes of chronic pain, such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, as well as those that trigger muscle and joint pain. Reduces pain Speed muscle recovery Balance hormone levels Promote healing of various conditions, such as peripheral neuropathy, or the malfunctioning of the part of the nervous system that delivers messages to the brain. GUA SHA RELIEVES SYMPTOMS OF OTHER CONDITIONS: 1. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation, liver damage, and liver scarring. Research suggests that Gua Sha may reduce chronic liver inflammation. One case study followed a man with high liver enzymes, an indicator of liver inflammation. 2. Migraine headaches. If your migraine headaches don’t respond to over the counter medications, Gua Sha may help. In one study, a 72 year old woman living with chronic headaches received Gua Sha over a 14-day period and her migraines improved during this time. 3. Neck pain. Gua Sha technique may prove effective for chronic neck pain. According to a study to determine the effectiveness of this therapy on 48 participants, the results found Gua sha has beneficial short term effects on pain and function in patients with chronic neck pain. 4. Tourette syndrome‘s involuntary movements such as facial tics, throat clearing, and vocal outbursts. According to a single case study, Gua Sha combined with other therapies helped to reduce symptoms. 6. Perimenopausal syndrome occurs as women move closer to menopause. Symptoms include: insomnia – irregular periods – anxiety – fatigue – hot flashes. One study, however, found that Gua Sha may reduce symptoms of perimenopause in some women. Upon completion of the study, the intervention group reported greater reduction of symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, and hot flashes compared to the control group.

Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners say body energy must continuously flow to prevent stress and disease. Over many millennia, these therapists have developed a variety of related bodywork therapies, including acupuncture, acupressure, and Chinese massage. Traditional Chinese healers manipulate the meridian system (inner energy points and pathways) to encourage the flow of “qi” (body energy) and blood throughout the body. Not only does “qi” flow through bodies, but the belief is that it animates the entire world. Practitioners balance their clients’ “qi” by clearing energy pathways called jing luo of blockages that cause pain and disease. Chinese massage practitioners identify pathways with limited flow and use hand pressure to restore balance and energy circulation. Today, Chinese massage is given all over the world. Western clients enjoy the mental and physical benefits of this practice, including stress relief and musculoskeletal realignment. We focus on the therapeutic benefits of massage, rather than the Western model of stress relief and relaxation. Our goal being to address and balance their clients’ entire holistic health, not just specific symptoms. Tui Na and Zhi Ya People in the West may refer to Chinese massage as Tui Na. However, this is only one of two main styles of traditional Chinese bodywork. Zhi Ya, uses pinching and pressing techniques similar to acupressure, reflexology, and qi gong with the use of oils. In Zhi Ya we use a variety of shou fa (hand techniques) that may either stimulate (yang) or sedate (yin) the patient. We balance the yin and yang energies to encourage health and lifestyle benefits. What to Expect from a Chinese Massage Session Both tui na and Zhi Ya sessions typically last more than a half hour and can take up to an hour or more. We may be more likely than other massage therapists to encourage talking during your massage. Not only does this provide feedback and increase your comfort, it may also help release emotions that arise during the session. We will work on your jin, this soft tissue connects the body and can affect the flow of chi. followed by work on xue (acupoints), which connect the body’s various organs via the meridian system. In Chinese medicine, the meridian system is a distribution network that resembles a web and links the body’s various parts together. Some Chinese massage techniques bear similarities to Western massage, like pressing, stretching, squeezing, pushing, and kneading. However, your practitioner may also dig, knuckle, and gently pluck your soft tissue. Your practitioner may even employ hammering and vibrating methods, or even walk on your back.
